His expertise in real estate development was also honed during his time as vice president of real estate development at Maguire Partners from 1988 to 1993, where he led numerous high-profile projects, such as Two Commerce Square in Philadelphia, PA.
Mr. Topping’s career began with a notable achievement at Perini Land and Development Company, where he managed a complex development project in San Francisco involving the restoration and modernization of a historic post office. His adept handling of challenges and successful appeal safeguarded the project’s financial future, resulted in a $20 million Historic Preservation Tax Credit, and showcased one of his most significant achievements in his burgeoning career. Additionally, he founded and chaired the Graduate Business School Real Estate Group at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, advancing the importance of real estate at this elite business school.
His professional journey was complemented by memberships in industry-related organizations such as CoreNet Global, where he served as chapter chairperson from 2003 to 2007. Mr. Topping’s contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the CoreNet Global Southern California Corporate Real Estate Executive of the Year and the CoreNet Global CRE Leadership Excellence award.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Topping has been actively involved in civic and non-profit associations. Additionally, from 2009 to 2022 he was chairperson of the board of trustees and board of governors for the Ronald McDonald House Los Angeles. Mr. Topping’s educational background includes an MBA in finance and marketing from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1979, and a Bachelor of Architecture with honors from the same institution in 1973. He is a licensed architect, which has significantly contributed to his success in both architecture and corporate real estate.
