Mr. Chigbu is a managing partner at Chigbu & Co. LLP, a boutique international business and tax law firm in Los Angeles with a team of attorneys specializing in cross-border transactions. Having established himself as an international corporate tax law expert, he has spent over 15 years leading the firm with distinction, acting as the contract tax director for his clients’ tax departments. In this role, Mr. Chigbu provides comprehensive tax planning and implementation advice, conducts tax provision reviews, manages outside advisers and ensures timely filing of tax returns. He also represents clients in tax audits before foreign and domestic tax authorities and addresses contingent reserve issues and disclosures under FIN 48. Furthermore, he implements best-practice processes that are compliant with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, Mr. Chigbu served as a tax advisor for PMC-Sierra from 2008 to 2011 and as a contract tax director at SGI between 2006 and 2008. His career also included significant roles as a vice president and general tax counsel with SAP BusinessObjects SA, a subsidiary of SAP AG, between 2000 and 2006 and as a vice president of global tax with Sanmina Corporation, a leading integrated manufacturing solutions provider, from 2005 to 2006.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Chigbu was a tax counsel at Chevron, beginning in 1996, where he notably helped the company secure $300 million in tax deductions in just one year. He also garnered success as a supervising senior tax consultant at KPMG from 1994 to 1996. Before embarking on his legal studies in the U.S., Mr. Chigbu served as a flight pilot in the Nigerian Military Police, an experience that undoubtedly contributed to his disciplined approach to his profession.
Mr. Chigbu’s academic background includes completing coursework in economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1986, a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1989, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Herbert Law Centre at Louisiana State University in 1993 and a Master of Laws in taxation from New York University in 1994. He has been admitted to practice by the California Bar Association.
Active in his professional community, Mr. Chigbu remains up-to-date in his field as a member of the California Tax Association. He also founded the Mercy Foundation, where he has been instrumental in providing developing countries with medical services comparable to those in the U.S.
