In this role, Ms. Nelms is responsible for ensuring accuracy and compliance in the revenue cycle processes in Health Information Management.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Nelms was a supervisor of clinical coding at Atrium Health between 2020 and 2022. From 2019 to 2020, she worked as a medical coder on a contract basis, where she applied her expertise in coding to various healthcare settings. In 2015, Ms. Nelms served a four-year post as a medical record technician for the United States Department of Defense, contributing to the integrity and confidentiality of military health records.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Nelms held positions such as coding specialist at American Anesthesiology in 2015 and CMS-Medicare claims coding specialist at UNC Health from 2008 to 2015. She began her journey in the healthcare industry in 1999 when she attended Edgecombe Community College and became a Certified Nursing Assistant working as a home health care nursing assistant with Home Life Care and at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC until 2000. Ms. Nelms gained valuable administrative experience as an administrative assistant and office manager at Halifax County Schools between 2003 and 2008.
In addition to her primary duties, Ms. Nelms has held various other positions that have enriched her professional journey. These include roles as a CARS specialist, certified nursing assistant, directory assistance operator, toll operator, medical records transcription clerk and customer service representative. Ms. Nelms’ diverse background has equipped her with a broad skill set and a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare industry.
Ms. Nelms’ academic achievements have played a significant role in her professional success. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Fayetteville State University in 2022, following an Associate of Applied Science in early childhood education and teaching from Wake Technical Community College in 2018. Additionally, she holds an Associate of Applied Science in health information management from Edgecombe Community College, which she obtained in 2008.
Beyond her formal education, Ms. Nelms’ has acquired numerous certifications, including accreditation as a Registered Health Information Technician from AHIMA. Furthermore, she is a certified wedding and event planner, Certified Nursing Assistant and an ordained minister, reflecting her devotion to continuous learning and versatile expertise.
A dedicated member of several professional organizations, Ms. Nelms has been affiliated with The Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement since 2022. She has also been an active member of Phi Sigma Phi and Psi Chi, The International Honor Society in Psychology, since 2021 and has been involved with AHIMA since 2019. Alongside her professional commitments, Ms. Nelms is an ardent civic advocate and has generously volunteered her time with Elevation Church in Ballantyne, NC.
Outside her current occupation, Ms. Nelms is an accomplished author and creative individual. She self-published her book “Sever the Ties” in 2022, driven by her passion for supporting personal growth and healing. She also just released a Prayer Journal ” Faith, Hope & Love” to help women deepen their prayer life. They are both available on Amazon. Ms. Nelms also hosts the podcast “Kimberly Speaking” and is a singer known for the song “Alone with You.” Her contributions have been recognized on the cover of Today’s Purpose Woman magazine and in the article “9 Books About Women Facing Adversity and Overcoming Through God’s Power.”
In her personal life, Ms. Nelms finds joy in activities such as bowling, reading, writing, traveling and spending time with her family.
