Starting her career at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation Hospital in New Orleans as a blood banker and for the State of Louisana’s Public Health Laboratory as a microbiologist before excelling as a clinical laboratory manager within the US Army from 1998 to 2004, where she served at the prestigious Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC before service in South Korea, and Redstone Arsenal in Alabama; including a tour in Kuwait and Iraq during the War on Global Terrorism in 2003.

Ms. Sherwood transferred her commission from the US Army to the US Public Health Service in 2004, where she worked either as a clinical laboratory manager, overseeing laboratory operations and ensuring the highest standards of quality and accuracy in diagnostic testing, as a clinical applications coordinator for the electronic health record ensuring the advancement into electronic reporting and accuracy of information, or as a health system administrator overseeing the operations of a full service five provider, two dentist ambulatory care clinic containing laboratory, pharmacy and radiology suites. Eventually retiring as a Captain in 2023 after 25 years of uniformed service. Her career in this sector also allowed Ms. Sherwood to serve on various Indian reservations, including Hopi, Pawnee, Pawhuska, Colorado River, Chemehuevi, Hualapai, Havasupai, and Moapa, demonstrating exceptional leadership and technical skills, and contributing to the improvement of laboratory services and patient care.

Although she earned numerous Army, PHS, and Indian Health Service awards over her 25 years of service, her highest awards, and the ones she is most proud of, are her Meritorious Service Medal from the US Army and her Director’s Award from the Indian Health Service Director.

Ms. Sherwood’s educational achievements have been crucial to her professional success. She received a Bachelor of Science in clinical laboratory science from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in 1993 after completing an internship in medical technology (clinical laboratory science) at the prestigious Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation Hospital in New Orleans and a Master of Science in quality assurance from California State University in 2005. Additionally, Ms. Sherwood holds credentials as a certified medical technologist through the American Society of Clinical Pathology and a certified clinical laboratory consultant through the American Medical Technology. These credentials underscore her dedication to maintaining high standards of professionalism and competence in her field.

Apart from her educational initiatives, Ms. Sherwood’s commitment to excellence in her field is further evidenced by her active membership in industry-related organizations, such as the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the American Medical Technologist, and the American Society for Quality.
