KNOXVILLE, TN, July 19, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Linda C. Kah, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Kah has served as an assistant professor and then a professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the field of geoscience. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate students, she researches sedimentary rocks with the aim of understanding the Earth’s ancient past by learning about its surface. Dr. Kah is particularly proud of her work as a mentor and teacher to graduate students. She has graduated multiple PhD and MS degree students, with almost all of the former going on to positions as tenure-track faculty.

Beyond her academic work, Dr. Kah was invited to participate as a co-investigator on NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover mission. Since 2012, she has used her knowledge of Earth’s planetary surface to analyze and incorporate data from Mars. Dr. Kah’s work with NASA has continued with the Mars2020 Perseverence rover mission, where she has served as both a co-investigator and as a long-term planner. Although she remains most passionate about studying Earth’s geology, her involvement with cutting-edge Mars research has been lauded for its groundbreaking nature.

Before she became an esteemed teacher, Dr. Kah pursued a strong education of her own. She received concurrent BS and MS degrees in geology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990. Dr. Kah then earned a PhD in geology at Harvard University in 1997. It was while completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri that she realized she wanted to take her career in the direction of a professorship at a state school, as it would allow her to teach and do research while also providing service to the greater community.

As a further sign of her commitment to her field, Dr. Kah maintains membership in multiple industry-related organizations. She holds the position of fellow at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and at the Geological Society of America. Additionally, Dr. Kah is a member of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, the American Geophysical Union, the Association of Women Geoscientists, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.

Throughout her career, Dr. Kah has authored over 100 studies in such journals as Nature, Science, the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Astrobiology, and Geological Magazine, among others. Her research has been cited more than 16,000 times—evidence of how valuable her contributions to the field have been.

Looking ahead, Dr. Kah plans to continue balancing teaching the next generation of geoscientists with conducting her own research. She is excited to spend more time studying ancient marine carbonate rocks, especially applying new advancements in technology to these projects.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kah regularly takes an interest in her students’ research and wants to encourage them to keep asking questions that might push the field of geoscience forward. Between her studies of Earth and her work on Mars, she has provided a prime example of doing just that.
