Since 2016, he has served as an instructional associate professor at the University of Houston, where he oversees professors teaching general statistics courses and manages the students enrolled in them. He is responsible for crafting exams and homework, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for his students. His impact extends to participating in conferences addressing family, gender and mental health issues, furthering his reputation as a teacher who makes his students feel individually valued and accepted.

Prior to reaching his role at the University of Houston, Dr. Caputo was a math teacher and department chair at Harmony Public Schools for two years. His leadership skills were evident as he guided the department in curriculum development and instructional strategies. From 2010 to 2012, he was the director of math education at the State University of New York, Old Westbury, where he oversaw student teachers and presented at academic conferences. Earlier in his career, from 2005 to 2010, he served as an assistant professor at Saint Joseph’s College, where he began shaping his pedagogical approach.

Dr. Caputo’s own academic journey laid a strong foundation for his philosophy and achievements as a professor. He earned a Doctor of Education in mathematics education from Columbia University in 2010, following a Master of Arts in mathematics from the State University of New York, Stony Brook in 2005. He also graduated as valedictorian with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and a minor in psychology from Saint Joseph’s College in 2001. To stay aware of the latest developments within his field, he is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the Association of College and University Educators.

In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Caputo holds several certifications that enhance his teaching capabilities. He possesses a New York State Teacher certification in mathematics for grades 7 to 12 and a Texas Educator certification in mathematics for grades 8 to 12. Furthermore, he is certified in effective college instruction by the Association of College and University Educators and is as a QPR suicide prevention gatekeeper by the QPR Institute.

Though his career counts many individual milestones, Dr. Caputo attributes his success to his desire to serve the needs of others and improve their lives. His expertise and reputation as a teacher saw him handpicked by the Texas State Department of Education to help revise and update the Texas Initiative Assessment, highlighting his long-term impact on the education system. He also is proud to work with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of Houston to help students and individuals make meaningful connections and cope with the many challenges of life.

Dr. Caputo’s commitment to making a positive impact extends beyond academia into civic engagement and creative endeavors. He is an active supporter of various charitable organizations within the LGBTQ+ community, reflecting his dedication to inclusivity and support for marginalized groups. As an author, he has contributed significantly to educational literature with works such as “Practices and Benefits of Reading in the Mathematics Curriculum,” published in the Journal of Urban Mathematics Education in 2015. Additionally, he has penned and released three novels, showcasing his versatility as a writer.

Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Caputo enjoys writing, woodworking, metalworking, cooking and spending time with his dogs and cats alongside his husband. He aims to inspire others by helping them recognize their potential and encouraging them to change the world to fit their unique selves rather than conforming to societal expectations.
