He previously served as the vice president of information technology from 2016 to 2019 and as the senior director of information technology from 2010 to 2016. His earlier roles there include director of IT quality, security, and compliance from 2006 to 2010; associate director of information technology from 1998 to 2006; and research scientist from 1993 to 1998.

Before he joined Gilead Sciences, Dr. Louie worked as a scientist at Monsanto from 1992 to 1993 and as an analytical chemist at Syntex Corporation from 1986 to 1987. His initial professional experience was as an organic chemist at Shell Agricultural Biological Sciences Research Center from 1985 to 1986.

Dr. Louie’s most significant achievement lies in laboratory automation within the life sciences industry. By integrating technologies and managing data effectively, he has improved data integrity, efficiency, and traceability in laboratories crucial for drug manufacturing, quality control and supply chain operations. This accomplishment ensures the availability of high-quality drugs and prevents drug shortages, playing a critical role in patient safety.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Louie has made notable contributions through presentations at industry conferences such as the Veeva Systems R&D Conference. He is also an active member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering and the American Chemical Society. His involvement with industry coalitions and the Food and Drug Administration in developing artificial intelligence (AI) guidelines for machines in the industry further underscores his commitment to advancing technological standards.

Dr. Louie’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career success. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of California Davis and a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of California Riverside. He also attributes much of his success to the mentorship he received throughout his career. By actively seeking out guidance from supervisors and senior executives, he gained valuable insights into skill sets crucial for success in his field.
