Currently serving as an associate editor for the journal Leadership in Higher Education at Frontiers Media, he has dedicated his professional life to enhancing teaching and learning within academic institutions. Dr. Cox’s tenure at Miami University, where he held various roles beginning in 1966, was particularly impactful. Notably, he served until 2020 as the founder (1990) and editor-in-chief of the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching and founder (1981) and director of the international Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching.

Dr. Cox’s major contribution to faculty and academic development is his initiation and establishment of faculty learning communities (FLCs) in higher education. He has secured state and federal grants to support his work, presenting FLC workshops at over 100 universities and colleges in the U.S. and abroad. His invited keynotes and seminars include universities in Australia, China, South Korea, Sweden, Denmark, the U.K., Canada, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, and Colombia. Dr. Cox’s commitment to advancing mathematics education is highlighted by his positions as chairman of the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America and president of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary.

The foundation for Dr. Cox’s illustrious career can be found in his academic background. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from DePauw University in 1961 and went on to complete his PhD in mathematics at Indiana University in 1966. His proficiency as a systems convener has been instrumental in his success, enabling him to bring together diverse groups for building community and scholarly learning efforts that have significantly advanced higher education.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Cox is in civic-minded organizations such as the Oxford Methodist Church and financially supports causes like the Alzheimer’s Organization. His dedication to service and community engagement is paralleled by his receipt of numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Award and the President’s Medal from Miami University, the certificate of special achievement from the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education, recognition as a National Service-Learning Ambassador, the C.C. MacDuffee Award from Pi Mu Epsilon, and The Marquis Who’s Who in America subject of biographical recognition, 2024-25.

In his personal life, Dr. Cox is a father to four children and has a passion for family, lepidoptery, the craftsman architecture of Greene and Greene, and collecting kaleidoscopes and Santa Claus figures. He continues to make a positive impact on people’s lives through his ongoing research presentations at Lilly and other Conferences. Dr. Cox wrote the forewords for three books focused on FLCs that are releasing in 2024. These publications promise to share valuable insights with educators and administrators alike, further cementing his legacy as a leader in higher education.
