Marquis Who’s Who Honors Ray L. Sundby, MBA, for Expertise in Engineering and Automation

Ray L. Sundby is a distinguished leader in the manufacturing and automation sectors

MILPITAS, CA, March 19, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Ray L. Sundby has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Sundby is a respected engineering expert currently serving as the director of automation at Translarity in California. Throughout his professional career he has made meaningful engineering contributions to the fields of automation, manufacturing and facilities. His diverse career led to a number of inventions and innovations. At Colorado Electro-Optics Inc. he invented new equipment needed to transition from through hole PCBs to early surface mount PCBs and also developed a fully automated optical coating system to manufacture infrared bandpass filters. At Ansell Ltd. in Alabama, he perfected a system that fully automated the high-volume leak testing of latex rubber products after numerous efforts over 15 preceding years had failed. At Eclipse Automation, automation projects included a plutonium handling robot used in a nuclear weapons trigger plant cleanup and shutdown, packaging equipment for many U.S. mail order pharmacies, and semiconductor wafer packaging machines for use in class 1 cleanrooms. At Raytheon Polar Services and with a subcontractor to Lockheed Martin, he was a facilities engineer “on the ice” in Antarctica in support of the United States Antarctic Program for five winter seasons, where he effected major improvements in energy efficiency.

Mr. Sundby’s journey at Translarity began in 2016 when he joined as a senior development engineer. He progressed to senior staff engineer in 2019 before being named the director of automation in 2022. In this leadership capacity, Mr. Sundby supervises a team of engineers dedicated to designing and building custom automated equipment for assembling and testing products. A major accomplishment is the invention of the machine that automates the insertion of probe pins into guide plates, which is necessary for the efficient assembly of probe cards used for testing semiconductors. Mr. Sundby’s innovation will replace the traditional manual process, which requires skills that workers require years to master.

Following a deep passion for tinkering with tools and building, inspired by his father, who practiced carpentry as a hobby, Mr. Sundby earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also proudly earned a Master of Business Administration from Troy University Dothan. Mr. Sundby’s commitment to continuous learning also led him to secure a certification in optical coating from UCLA, further underscoring his technical proficiency and ingenuity.

In an effort to maintain productive professional and civic engagement networks, Mr. Sundby has been active with organizations that include the Hoofers Sailing and Mountaineering Clubs at UW-Madison, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group Inc. as a volunteer – group leader for four years, Habitat for Humanity as a volunteer – house Leader in Durban South Africa, American Red Cross with deployments to hurricanes Katrina and Sandy and California State Parks as a trail maintenance volunteer.

Mr. Sundby’s passion outside of his professional career is his activism to solve the climate crisis in less than 30 years. To this end he is active with the Thorium Energy Alliance, Citizens’ Climate Lobby and the Foundation For Climate Restoration. Three things are done in parallel: Provide enough clean, safe, lowest-cost energy to meet future needs and eliminate energy poverty worldwide, Achieve lowest-cost climate restoration back to the pre-industrial atmosphere and ocean conditions, and Remove roadblocks and distractions in the way of achieving 1 and 2.

To balance his professional obligations with his personal interests and family commitments, Mr. Sundby enjoys dancing and cherishes time with his two children. Looking toward the future, Mr. Sundby plans to persist in finding fulfillment in his current projects grounded in innovation and problem-solving in the sectors discussed above, and he remains open to exploring a range of future opportunities over the next several hundred years, fully expecting a cure for aging before he gets old.
