Dr. Brown is a distinguished senior consultant at Shell Projects and Technology (US), where he has been contributing his expertise since 2012. With a career spanning over four decades, he has established himself as a global subject matter expert in advanced process control theory and physical properties. Based in London, Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies operating in over 70 countries.

Besides his contributions to Shell, Dr. Brown has served as the principal at Alert Conformance Technology (ACT) since 2009, a role he continues to hold alongside his position at Shell. Among his tasks, he is responsible for working with venture capitalists and private equity firms for biofuel development. Additionally, Dr. Brown worked for VLSI Technology with semiconductors, optimizing MOC production, and later consulted with ACT in the semiconductor area.

Having begun his professional journey in refining petrochemicals at Setpoint Inc., Dr. Brown served as a lead project engineer from 1988 to 1992. He then advanced to Koch Industries, where he held roles as a research and development engineer and senior chemical and systems engineering excellence engineer from 1992 to 1998. Continually advancing, Dr. Brown joined LyondellBasell Industries Holdings B.V. as a principal engineer, a position he held until 2009. During this time, he managed $12 million in projects and operational reviews to improve overall performance.

Dr. Brown’s academic foundation is robust. His journey began with a bachelor of science in chemical petroleum engineering from the University of Kansas in 1982. Subsequently, he received a master’s degree and a doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1984 and 1994, respectively.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Brown is actively involved in professional and civic organizations. His dedication to advancing chemical engineering is evidenced by his membership in the National Petroleum Refiners Association and his role on the board of directors for Dynamics Major Control. Additionally, Dr. Brown has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Boy Scouts of America, youth athletics, and high school computer competitions with NASA. Dr Brown mentored a high school SPHERES team presenting at MIT for the opportunity to run their own software by NASA on the manned shuttle. The team was awarded NASA mission patches. Dr. Brown has also mentored numerous graduate engineers. He enjoys inspiring teams and individuals to meet and exceed their goals.

Dr. Brown’s contributions to the field are marked by significant achievements, including patents in biochemical processes and contributions to patents tied up with NDAs. He was also involved in the Deepwater Horizon project and has published work with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Automatic Control Council.

In 2024, in recognition of his contributions, Dr. Brown received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sigma Xi, and was named a Sigma Xi research fellow. He also received several other accolades from Tau Beta Pi and the Microbiology Society. He attributes his success to his diverse family background and life experiences, emphasizing team success over individual accomplishments. Looking ahead, Dr. Brown envisions spending more time enhancing productivity in production methods and processes, reflecting his enduring passion for his field.
