Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A renowned leader in the world of education, Dr. Gandhi has made significant contributions to the field over his seven-year tenure as the superintendent of Fargo Public Schools. With expertise in organizational leadership, strategic alignment and systems thinking, he has been instrumental in creating environments where educators and students can thrive. His commitment to student-centered decision-making and advocacy for marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA2S+ rights, has been a hallmark of his leadership. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that student voices are included in every decision-making process, fostering an inclusive and transparent educational environment.
Dr. Gandhi’s career began with Teach for America, where he served as a special education teacher at Coop Elementary School in Houston from 2007 to 2010. This experience ignited his passion for education and led him to pursue various leadership roles within the Houston Independent School District, including a pivotal role in turning around underperforming schools as part of the Apollo 20 project. As principal of Neff Elementary School from 2012 to 2014 and later the Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center from 2014 to 2016, his leadership resulted in demonstrable growth of student achievement and improving school accountability. His success in these roles garnered national attention and propelled him into higher leadership positions.
In 2016, Dr. Gandhi became the research, data and accountability officer at Colorado Springs Harrison District 2, where he implemented the first fully realized educator performance pay model in the United States. This innovative approach placed all staff members on a performance-based pay system under Colorado Bill 1092. His achievements in this role and his prior roles led to his appointment as the superintendent of Fargo Public Schools in 2018, where he has continued to drive positive change and advocate for student success.
In addition to his work in public education, Dr. Gandhi is the owner of OptimizED Strategic Solutions, a firm dedicated to providing technology-driven solutions for school districts and mission-driven organizations. The firm focuses on leveraging advanced technology and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, execute initiatives, solve complex problems, and enhance teaching and learning outcomes, particularly for marginalized students. His vision is to transform education and achieve educational justice by personalizing curricula and employing innovative technologies to engage diverse learners.
Dr. Gandhi’s academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in educational leadership from Northwest Nazarene University, a Master of Education in special education and a Bachelor of Science in political science from Texas A&M University. He holds certifications from The School Superintendents Association’s Urban Superintendents Academy Program at the University of Southern California, The School Superintendents Association’s National Superintendent Certification Program, and a certification in education finance from Georgetown University’s edunomics program.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Gandhi is actively involved in civic organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA of the Northern Sky, the Sanford Fargo Hospital Board, the Fargo Public School Foundational Board and the Plains Art Museum in Fargo. His dedication to education and community service is reflected in multiple accolades, including the Arc of Justice Award from the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition and being named the North Dakota Superintendent of the Year in 2023.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Gandhi enjoys golf, reading, sports, technology and spending quality time with his family. Although leaving his position as superintendent was a challenging decision, it allows him to focus on his new business venture with his wife while spending more time with their children.
Looking to the future, Dr. Gandhi aims to inspire other leaders to achieve a healthy work-life balance by demonstrating that true success lies not in status but in dedicating time to one’s family and personal values. He aspires to transform education through innovative solutions that elevate the effectiveness of school districts and mission-driven organizations while setting an example for his children about the importance of prioritizing family over career ambitions. Additionally, he is collaborating on a new book, his second, that is set to release in 2025.
