Mr. Chowfla currently serves as an adjunct faculty member on strategic management at the Carey Business School at The Johns Hopkins University, a position he has held since 2024.

Most recently, Mr. Chowfla was the president and chief executive officer of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) from 2013 to 2022. During his tenure, he successfully transformed the organization into a global brand. GMAC notably serves as a global leader in helping talented individuals and business schools discover and evaluate each other. GMAT owns and manages the GMAT, EA and NMAT business school admissions tests as well as mba.com, businessbecause.com and the GMAC (formerly MBA) tours company. During his term, GMAC greatly diversified its footprint, working with over 2,000 business schools around the world and developing a global talent pipeline for graduate management education. Mr. Chowfla was a frequent speaker on issues relating to global student mobility at industry events and to global media.

Previously, Mr. Chowfla served as an executive vice president of global market units and chief strategy officer at Comviva Technologies Ltd. In India between 2006 and 2012 where he led the companies push into global markets, establishing 15 international offices and partnering with major telecom operators. Comviva was subsequently acquired by Tech Mahindra, a leading Indian IT services provider. He also served as partner and managing director at Timeline Ventures, a California based venture capital firm investing in early stage telecom and enterprise software companies from 2001 to 2006.

Following college, Mr. Chowfla started as a sales executive at IDM in 1979 before moving to Datamation Systems from 1981 to 1983. His career took a significant turn when he joined Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 1983. Over the next two decades, he held various roles with the technology company, including computer sales manager for Turkey and Egypt (based in Athens), European reseller channel manager for printers (Germany), vice president of printers and storage for the Asia Pacific (Singapore), worldwide marketing head for the Asia peripherals division (Singapore) and vice president and general manager of the inkjet media division (San Diego) until 2001.

Apart from his primary career endeavors, Mr. Chowfla has found success as an advisor, speaker, board member and columnist in various capacities.

Mr. Chowfla’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi in 1977 and a Master of Business Administration in marketing and finance from the faculty of management studies at the University of Delhi in 1979.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Chowfla is actively involved in civic affiliations. He presently serves on the board of the Global Business School Network since 2022. Moreover, Mr. Chowfla contributes articles to professional journals on business education topics and writes a regular column on the business of business education.
