Dr. McCabe has carved a distinguished career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he currently serves as the associate division chief for statutory programs. Since 2022, Mr. McCabe has been at the helm of three critical programs: National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP), National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), and Disaster and Failure Studies. His role involves managing the budget for these programs and meeting the demands of Congress regarding participation in meetings and special events. Before this position, Dr. McCabe was deeply involved in earthquake hazard reduction efforts as the director of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) at NIST since 2017, a role he took on after serving as deputy director in 2011. Between 2015 and 2018, he also contributed his expertise as a research structural engineer and group leader within the Earthquake Engineering Group at NIST.

Before joining NIST, Dr. McCabe had a successful academic career. He was a professor of structural engineering at the University of Kansas in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering from 1985 to 2007. Significant contributions to structural engineering education and research marked his academic tenure. From 2007 to 2010, he also led the NEES Consortium Inc. as its chief executive officer, demonstrating his leadership in earthquake engineering research. His career began as a project stress engineer with Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers from 1978 to 1981, laying the foundation for his future endeavors in structural engineering.

Dr. McCabe’s professional affiliations include memberships in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. These memberships have provided him with platforms to collaborate with peers and contribute to advancing standards and practices within his field.

Dr. McCabe’s educational qualifications have been instrumental in his success. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1987 after completing a Master of Science in engineering mechanics/mechanical engineering in 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1972, both from Colorado State University. Additionally, he is a licensed professional engineer in Kansas and Colorado. Dr. McCabe attributes his success to over four decades dedicated to studying structures’ performance during earthquakes to improve building resilience and prevent casualties.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. McCabe enjoys spending time with his family, including his spouse, Ann, of 49 years and their children, Stephanie and granddaughter Cavan. He is an avid sports fan who enjoys watching basketball and football and stays active with his Labrador. Looking ahead, Dr. McCabe is committed to ensuring that Congress reauthorizes statutory programs under his leadership with adequate financial resources for their execution.
