Dr. Ewen, a distinguished professor emeritus at the City University of New York, has made significant contributions to media studies, history, sociology and American studies. His career commenced at Empire State College, where he served as an assistant professor from 1971 to 1977. During this time, he began to explore the intersections between media and culture, which would become a central theme in his later work. In 1977, Dr. Ewen joined Hunter College and the City University of New York, where he continued teaching, earning distinguished professor status in 2002 and becoming emeritus upon his retirement in 2020. His tenure at these institutions was marked by his dedication to educating students on the profound impact of media on society as a pioneer in the field.

In addition to his primary academic roles, Dr. Ewen served as the chair of the board of directors for the Frederic Ewen Academic Freedom Center at New York University (NYU) from 2006 to 2014. He was also a distinguished visiting professor at NYU from 1999 to 2000. These positions allowed him to further influence the academic community and advocate for academic freedom and integrity.

Dr. Ewen’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968, followed by a Master of Arts in history from the University of Rochester in 1969. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in history at the University at Albany, State University of University, in 1974. Dr. Ewen’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his pioneering work.

As a scholar, Dr. Ewen published several influential publications that have been adapted into documentary films, underscoring their impact on contemporary culture. His book “All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary Culture” was transformed into “The Public Mind,” a documentary series exploring media and public perception. Another notable work, “PR! A Social History of Spin,” inspired documentaries aired on BBC and French television, highlighting its global relevance.

Beyond his career, Dr. Ewen is actively involved with civic-minded organizations such as Doctors Beyond Borders and serves as the president of the Frederic Ewen Foundation. He is also a member of the directors’ circle at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Dr. Ewen’s contributions have been recognized with several accolades, including being a finalist for the Business Book of the Year by The Financial Times and having one of his books nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. As he looks to the future, he is committed to focusing on his health while completing a new book, “I Am an Eye: A Brief History of Optics and Individualism.”
