He is also a law professor affiliated with Texas Tech University since 2001. Having spent over two decades educating future legal professionals, Mr. James imparts his extensive knowledge of probate, tax, elder law, and religious liberty to students. Moreover, he served as an associate professor of law at the University of Tennessee from 2004 to 2019, teaching gratuitous transfers (aka wills and trusts) and elder law in the law school’s summer programs. Mr. James began his journey in legal academia as a visiting assistant professor at Syracuse University College of Law from 2000 to 2001. A teacher who has amassed over 45 years of professional excellence, he began in 1977 as an elementary school teacher and subsequently taught high school students before becoming a college educator. Furthermore, Mr. James held several administrative positions, such as assistant high school principal, acting high school principal, and director of an adult education program. In the field, he brought his legal acumen to the judiciary as a judicial clerk for the New York State Court of Appeals in Albany, New York, from 1998 to 2000 before entering into private practice.

Mr. James’s literary contributions extended beyond his seminal book on Alzheimer’s care with the release of his second book, “Current Conflicts in Law and Religion,” by Vandeplas Publishing in 2015. The thought-provoking book discusses various current issues relating to the intersection between law and religion. His other books include “Elder Law: Cases and Materials” (Esquire Books, 2019), “Contemporary Issues in Law and Religion,” (Esquire Books, 2021) and “Texas Elder Law” (Fastcase, 2023). Apart from his writing contributions, Mr. James is a popular speaker at legal seminars, symposia, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses. Moreover, Mr. James is a contributing editor of the Nonprofit Law Prof Blog.

Apart from his vested interest in law and education, Mr. James has been active civically as a member of the panel of experts of the International Religious Liberty Association since 2006 and has served as the Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL) Director of the New York Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists since 2019. Mr. James previously held that position from 1998 to 2001 before resuming responsibilities almost two decades later.

In preparation for his career, Mr. James earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Virgin Islands in 1986 and a Master of Divinity from Andrews University in 1991. Furthering his education, he garnered a Master of Business Administration from the University at Albany in 1993, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Syracuse University in 1998, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Education from Newburgh Theological Seminary in 2013. Mr. James has been admitted to practice by the New York and Texas Bar Associations, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He is also a registered tax return preparer with the Internal Revenue Service, and an ordained minister of religion.

Adding to his professional prowess, Mr. James is a member of several influential law organizations, namely the Southeastern Association of Law Schools, the International Religious Liberty Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Lubbock County Bar Association, the Atlantic Union Attorneys’ Association, and, among others, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Mr. James’s career is adorned with numerous accolades that recognize his contributions to law and education, including being named a Family/Elder Law Trailblazer by The National Law Journal in 2022. He also received the Heritage Legend Award from the University of the West Indies in 2007, and multiple awards from Texas Tech University for teaching excellence and scholarly engagement. He has also been honored in Texas Lawyer Magazine. Besides his many work-related accolades, Mr. James is recognized as a six-time winner of various calypso competitions in his native Caribbean, earned a place in the Dominica Calypso Music Hall of Fame, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of the West Indies in 2007. He attributes much of his success to the discipline and hard-working ethic instilled by his father and the support of many good people who provided him with opportunities along the way.
