Mr. Powell has dedicated his career to advancing the field of special education and assistive technology. As the assistive technology director at Bosma Enterprises in Indianapolis since 2007, he has played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and success of adult students. The nonprofit organization is recognized as the largest employer of blind individuals in Indiana. Among his many responsibilities, Mr. Powell ensures the safety of all students and assists them with their schedules and individual needs. He also holds regular meetings with Indiana State University, virtually and in person, to provide valuable guidance and support to students.

Before joining Bosma Enterprises, Mr. Powell held roles as a lecturer at the University of Nebraska and Indiana State University. Inspired to become a teacher when he was a student at the Indiana School for the Blind, he excelled academically despite his challenges and began substitute teaching at age 14. Mr. Powell’s ongoing commitment to education and technology has earned him recognition as an expert in his field.

Mr. Powell is an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the Australian Computer Society and the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired. These affiliations have allowed him to stay current with advancements in his field and contribute to the broader community of professionals supporting individuals with visual impairments.In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Powell’s educational background has been instrumental in his success. He earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in special education and teaching at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, in 1981. Mr. Powell has also obtained numerous certifications that have further enhanced his expertise. These include credentials from Microsoft, the Australian Computer Society, and NVAccess. He also holds a professional educator’s license in Indiana and a literary braille transcriber license through the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Mr. Powell is a professional member of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Australian Computer Society. These memberships have helped him remain at the forefront of his profession.

Beyond his professional life, Mr. Powell is actively involved in civic-minded organizations. He sponsors the Bosma Visionary Opportunities Foundation, Bazaar Funds, and the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation. His dedication to these causes underscores his commitment to improving the lives of individuals with visual impairments.

Mr. Powell has received several accolades throughout his career, including an Alumni Award from Special Divisions in 1990. His lifelong commitment to helping people improve their lives and overcome obstacles has driven his many accomplishments.

Looking ahead, Mr. Powell envisions another individual working closely with him, taking over his responsibilities. This individual, who is deaf-blind and communicates similarly to Mr. Powell, has limited vision but shows great promise in continuing and expanding his work. As he approaches retirement age, Mr. Powell hopes to ensure that his legacy of helping others continues well into the future.
