Since 2023, she has been the director of software engineering and observability at General Motors (GM) in Austin, Texas, responsible for customer interaction, strategic planning with leadership, team management, and budget discussions on software licensing. Ms. Sampson’s expertise in observability has led to innovative advancements in factory operations, showcasing her ability to adapt cutting-edge technology to new environments.
Before accepting her current position, Ms. Sampson was the director of quality engineering and observability at GM from 2020 to 2023. She also served as the IT senior development manager between 2015 and 2020 and the IT senior QA manager from 2013 to 2015. Ms. Sampson’s tenure at the automotive manufacturing company was marked by a decade of impactful contributions.
Before joining GM, Ms. Sampson held various positions at Dell in Austin between 2002 and 2013. Hired as an IT test analyst, she rose to become a global test lead, test strategist, IT manager, and program manager. In addition to her corporate roles, Ms. Sampson has found success as the owner of Green Vita, a startup focused on AI solutions for aiding trees.
Ms. Sampson’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, cum laude, from Fudan University in Shanghai, a Bachelor of Arts in management information systems and finance from the University of Houston, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Additionally, she obtained a certification in leading with impact from the University of Michigan in 2022 and the Harvard Business Analytics Program through Harvard University in 2024.
Outside of her primary career goals, Ms. Sampson is actively involved as a professional member of TechWomen. She also engages in various civic-minded organizations as a team manager and robotics coach at FIRST LEGO League UAE since 2023, where she continues to inspire and guide the next generation of tech leaders. Ms. Sampson previously served as a team manager for Destination Imagination from 2018 to 2020.
Ms. Sampson’s dedication to continuous learning and intellectual curiosity have been instrumental in her success. Overcoming significant challenges as a first-generation immigrant from China, she displayed remarkable perseverance during her 10 years living independently in a new country before marriage.
Ms. Sampson envisions expanding her responsibilities within her current role at GM while planning for future endeavors beyond retirement. She also aims to establish a career coaching business and pursue teaching opportunities in business schools at universities while continuing to grow Green Vita.
