Prior to founding Read to Succeed, Dr. Afanaseva-Frisher served for six years as a professor of the English language at the Globe Institute of Technology, where she taught English composition, critical thinking, and writing. Her work with students from diverse backgrounds highlighted the challenges they faced in expressing themselves in writing and developing critical thinking skills. This experience fueled her desire to create a custom writing curriculum that would better serve her students’ needs.
Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Afanaseva-Frisher began her career teaching linguistics and English at Saint Petersburg State University. These early experiences in academia laid the foundation for her future endeavors in education; as her career progressed, she has continued to demonstrate a commitment to fostering a love for writing and critical thinking among her students.
Dr. Afanaseva-Frisher’s academic achievements include earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Germanic languages, literatures and linguistics from Saint Petersburg State University in 2010, following a bachelor’s degree from the same institution in 2002. She attributes her success to the professional experiences she has gained, the mentors and educators who have guided her, and the diverse students she has encountered throughout her career.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Afanaseva-Frisher has been involved in civic-minded activities such as tutoring underprivileged children in Russia. This involvement reflects her dedication to making a positive impact on society through education.
In her personal time, Dr. Afanaseva-Frisher enjoys nature, landscape and portrait photography, as well as visual design. She and her spouse, Ilya Frisher, are the proud parents of one child. Looking ahead, she plans to create a textbook aimed at helping more children by providing information, alternatives and a clearer understanding of writing.
