Dr. Appel, a distinguished physicist, has dedicated nearly three decades to advancing the field of subsurface characterization for petroleum engineering applications. Holding the position of a Chief Scientist at Shell, he works in a team of seven Chief Scientists, providing strategic guidance to senior executives of the Shell Group on technological advancements essential for the company’s growth. His role involves advising on research and development initiatives to enhance Shell’s technological capabilities and fostering collaborations with academia.

In addition to this position, Dr. Appel is a Principal Technical Expert for coring and core analysis at Shell. In this capacity, he plays a pivotal role in developing core analysis technology and deploying Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology to better characterize reservoirs.

Between 2007 and 2021, Dr. Appel served as manager of the Rock and Fluid Physics team at the same company while also holding the title of Principal Technical Expert for coring and core analysis. His earlier roles at Shell include Research Physicist and Petrophysicist. He began his professional journey as a Primary Researcher during his tenure at Exxon Mobil Corporation from 1995 to 1997.

Dr. Appel’s expertise is widely recognized within the industry, particularly in core analysis and Magnetic Resonance technology. He has been an active member of several professional organizations, including serving as Director-at-Large for the Society for Core Analysts and holding previous positions, such as Vice President Technology and Director within the same society. Additionally, he contributes to the scientific community through his role on the scientific advisory board of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Academically, Dr. Appel holds a Ph.D. from Universität Leipzig, graduating summa cum laude in 1995. He also holds a master’s degree in physics from the same institution, earned in 1992. In recognition of his career accomplishments, he has received several honors from the Society for Core Analysts and has served as an associate editor for various journals covering numerous topics, such as Petrophysics, Reservoir Engineering and Magnetic Resonance.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Appel enjoys competitive sailing and spending time with his family. Looking ahead, he aims to enhance the industry’s petroleum engineering capabilities and to adapt technologies to address the challenges of the energy transition towards the provision of more and cleaner energy.
