CHAMPAIGN, IL, January 12, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Numa Markee has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in education within sociology, applied linguistics and conversation analysis, Dr. Markee has earned distinction as an emeritus associate professor with the department of linguistics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Since 2015, he has focused his efforts on conducting research while working on his linguistic autobiography, “Memoirs of a Cultural Mongrel,” based on his experiences on growing up with parents who were diplomats. He reviews journals and evaluates other professors who are applying for promotion or tenure as well.

Notably, Dr. Markee is a co-founder of two significant sub-disciplines within linguistics. The diffusion of innovations serves as his lens to scrutinize the emergence of trends in language teaching methods and he engages in a social approach to second-language acquisition within the domain of conversation analysis. He is presently working to create an effective convergence of these two disciplines, persuading his colleagues in conversation analysis to delve deeper into the nuances of their methodology as they extend its application to areas where understanding of conversation analysis remains relatively scarce. His goal is to foster a more comprehensive and enlightened integration of conversation analysis across diverse academic domains.

Before his present role, Dr. Markee began his career as an assistant professor for Universidad Nacional Autónoma de M xico in 1980 and became a key English language teaching officer and lecturer for the British Council in Khartoum, Sudan in 1981. Following this time, he served as an assistant professor and associate professor for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1988 until taking his present role in 2015.

Dr. Markee has also been a guest editor for numerous works, including “Language learning, cognition, and interactional practices,” International Review of Applied Linguistics” in 2009, and has contributed his own works to the field. Most recently, he co-edited “Conversation Analytic Research on the Classroom: Theory and Practice,” which was published by the Springer Publishing Company in 2021. Notably, he authored “Managing Curricular Innovation” in 1997 and “Conversation Analysis” for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates in 2000.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Markee earned a bachelor’s degree in French and Italian languages from University College London in 1975. Following this achievement, he attained a master’s degree in English as a second language in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in applied linguistics in 1988, both from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Within the coming years, Dr. Markee intends to enter the second phase of his conversation analysis career, which will involve extensive travel with his wife to explore exotic destinations worldwide. Also a skilled photographer, he aims to win a photography competition and to publish a collection of photographs capturing the essence of his journeys in the captivating landscapes of Utah and Arizona.
