Dr. Yoder, an esteemed expert in plant microbiology, has made significant contributions to the field through his extensive career in academic teaching and research. Currently serving as an adjunct professor at Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District since 2020, he is dedicated to educating undergraduate students in biology. Dr. Yoder began his career in 1971, contributing as a professor at Cornell University until 1999. During his tenure, he conducted pioneering research on molecular plant-microbe interactions. Notably, he successfully demonstrated the genetic transformation of a filamentous fungal plant pathogen in his lab, a milestone that has paved the way for researchers worldwide to advance genetic transformation studies in plant pathogens. Critical to this achievement were leaves-of-absence for studies at Stanford Univ. and MIT.

Dr. Yoder has been deeply involved in distribution of public funds for support of basic research in his field. This has included services on competitive grant proposal review panels at the USDA, NIH, NSF, EPA, and DOE.

In 2000, Dr. Yoder relocated to California to delve into the emerging field of genomics. He worked at the Torrey Mesa Research Institute, focusing on agricultural genomics, and later held research positions at biotech companies such as Diversa and Celgene Corporation. After retiring in 2013, he continued to contribute to his field through consulting and teaching opportunities.

Laying the groundwork for Dr. Yoder’s professional success was his academic journey, which began with a Bachelor of Arts from Goshen College in 1964. He then pursued a Master of Science at Michigan State University, graduating in 1968, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in plant microbiology from the same institution in 1971. He attributes his success to his transition from a focus on physiology to genetics, which propelled his career forward and enabled him to achieve groundbreaking results in his field.

Dr. Yoder is a respected member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where he is recognized as a fellow. He also holds membership with the American Society for Microbiology and the American Phytopathological Society. His contributions to science are further evidenced by his approximately 150 articles published in high profile peer reviewed science and technology journals.
