Mr. Rimel is passionate about renewable energy and sustainable power generation to mitigate further global warming and protect the planet for future generations. Specifically, the idea of harnessing the sun as an energy source and finding ways to store that energy effectively and safely is a focus of his. Since 2024, Mr. Rimel has served as a technical product manager at Powin. In this role, he primarily collaborates with the product management team on the software side, leveraging his extensive background in controls engineering to aid software teams in developing robust and high-quality products for utility-scale battery storage.
Before stepping into a product management role, Mr. Rimel occupied several engineering roles before his desire to influence organizations at a higher level propelled him to seek out a product management position. Before joining Powin, he held several positions at Lightning eMotors, beginning as a senior controls engineer in 2020; quickly advanced to become the controls engineering manager in 2021, where he honed his leadership skills; and became a staff controls engineer within the core engineering team in 2022 before taking on the role of controls release manager and scrum master later that year.
During his tenure at Lightning eMotors, Mr. Rimel focused on commercial electric vehicles software and integration, which aligns with his passion for renewable energy and sustainable power generation to protect the planet for future generations. Prior to his time at that company, he was a lead automation controls engineer at Universal Controls between 2019 and 2020. Mr. Rimel’s career also included a position as a senior controls engineer at Orica from 2018 to 2019 and as a gas turbine controls engineer at GE Oil & Gas from 2016 to 2018. These roles allowed him to gain valuable experience across various industries, including power, oil and gas, mining, agriculture and electric vehicles.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Rimel worked as an instrumentation and control engineer at Suncor Energy from 2015 to 2016 and as a field service engineer at Woodward Inc. from 2011 to 2014. He began his professional journey as a student intern for Envirofit International while attending Colorado State University from 2006 to 2009, subsequently graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Business Administration in 2010. Overall, his diverse experiences have equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of mechanical aspects and electrical interactions within control systems.
Along with his degree, Mr. Rimel obtained several certifications, including Certified Scrum Product Owner in 2024 and Certified Scrum Master in 2023 from the Scrum Alliance, as well as Managing Engineering and Technical Professionals from SAE International in 2022, where he is a member. Outside of his professional endeavors, he is actively involved in an adult lacrosse league, demonstrating his commitment to community engagement, and enjoys an array of outdoor activities like camping, hiking and skiing. Looking ahead, Mr. Rimel envisions continuing his work at Powin or a similar company to contribute toward achieving energy independence for the United States.
