Robin E. Fleshman, PhD, Celebrated by Marquis Who’s Who for Dedication to the Field of Educational Leadership

With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Fleshman has established herself as a distinguished figure in the field of education. Currently serving as the principal of Children’s Aid College Prep Charter School since 2018, she has been instrumental in expanding the school’s reach from kindergarten through fifth grade to include middle school education. Her leadership has seen the school celebrate four graduating classes, a significant increase from the two classes in 2018.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Fleshman was the deputy division director at the Children’s Aid Society from 2008 to 2018 and concurrently served as deputy director of the School-Age Division from 2013 to 2018. In these capacities, she oversaw 14 schools and initiated over six community schools across various districts in the South Bronx.

Dr. Fleshman’s contributions to education extend beyond administration; she has also been at the forefront of teaching and curriculum development. As a teacher with Manhattan Community School District 2 in New York starting in 1997, she taught junior high school students in subjects including biology, earth science and chemistry regents. Additionally, she worked as a science desk developer and science coach within the same district. Dr. Fleshman’s dedication to science education was further exemplified through her role as a high school regents teacher with the Harlem Educational Activities Fund.

Dr. Fleshman’s academic journey is marked by an impressive array of degrees that have shaped her educational philosophy and approach. She earned a PhD in science education from Columbia University in the City of New York, completing it between 2011 and 2017 with a dissertation that examined high-stakes assessments and their impact on college readiness among high school students. Her educational background also encompasses a Master of Science in educational leadership and administration from the College of Saint Rose, obtained in 2023, a Master of Arts in philosophy from Teachers College of Columbia University in 2013, and a Master of Arts in biology, general science and secondary education from New York University in 2000. Underpinning her graduate work, Dr. Fleshman earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Old Dominion University, achieved in 1994.

Complementing her professional work, Dr. Fleshman’s commitment to community service is evident through her involvement with Keeping Our Families Together By Reinforcing Our Love, where she focused on supporting families affected by HIV/AIDS by providing transitional housing and other essential services. Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Committee for Children’s Aid College Prep Charter School and participates in the Bronx Community Colleges Collaborative Education Committee. Her dedication extends to membership in various committees, including the Educational Committee and Books Before Breakfast at First Corinthian Baptist Church. Dr. Fleshman also volunteers her time with several charities, including Intergenerational Services, Shelters, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

In addition to her professional and community contributions, Dr. Fleshman has made significant strides in creative works. She was featured in “Cultivating a New Generation of Women in STEM” by Children’s Aid NYC in 2022. Furthermore, she authored a curriculum on teaching HIV/AIDS to middle school, high school, and college students, contributed chapters to the Science Identity Book and several textbooks, and submitted numerous articles to various professional journals.

The foundation for Dr. Fleshman’s success can be traced back to her upbringing and the influential figures throughout her life. She credits her parents for instilling values that have guided her through various challenges and acknowledges the pivotal role played by educators and mentors who have shaped her career trajectory. A particular source of inspiration was her 11th-grade chemistry teacher, who encouraged her pursuit of science and emphasized the importance of higher education for young women.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Fleshman leads a fulfilling personal life marked by community service through church and sorority activities as well as quality time spent with family playing musical instruments like the bassoon.

Looking ahead, Dr. Fleshman aspires to continue her journey in educational leadership with the goal of serving as the Secretary of Education for the United States. She remains open to new opportunities that align with her path and is guided by faith in achieving her professional objectives.
