Dr. Wurtele has crafted a distinguished professional profile in the realms of psychology and equine activities. She currently excels as an expert witness for SKW Consulting, where she has leveraged her extensive knowledge about preventing childhood sexual abuse. Notably, she held the title of Associate Dean for the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) from 2013 to 2020, having first joined the faculty staff as a professor in 1988. Upon her retirement in 2020, UCCS granted her the title of Professor Emerita. Dr. Wurtele previously mentored the student population at Washington State University, where she taught psychology at the rank of associate professor from 1983 to 1988.

Throughout her career, Dr. Wurtele was recognized for her distinct contributions to psychology and child safety. She received the William Friedrich Memorial Child Sexual Abuse Research, Assessment and/or Treatment Award from the Institute on Violence Abuse and Trauma in 2009 and was honored with the FIRST Independent Research Award by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1987. As an author, Dr. Wurtele made significant strides in educating parents on child safety through works such as “Safe Connections: A Parent’s Guide to Safeguarding Young Teens from Sexual Harm,” “Out of Harm’s Way: A Parent’s Guide to Protecting Young Children from Sexual Abuse” and “Off Limits: A Parent’s Guide to Keeping Kids Safe from Sexual Abuse.”

Dr. Wurtele’s educational background laid the foundation for her professional achievements as an educator, researcher and consultant. She earned a PhD from the University of Alabama in 1983 after finishing a Master of Arts in clinical psychology there in 1980. Her academic journey began with the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where she graduated with high distinction in 1977.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Wurtele aspires to establish a legacy through K Bar W Ranch, which she and her husband established in 1998. Notably, the resident stallion, Cat Painted Illusion, is renowned in the industry for both breeding and competitive cutting, and Dr. Wurtele aims to elevate his production record and persist in training and showcasing her horses’ abilities.
