For more than six decades, Scott Newell has earned a reputation for excellence in the design, manufacture and operation of crushing equipment. Throughout his career he has benefited from the influence of his father, Alton Newell, who invented the modern car and scrap shredder in the early 1960s. To recognize the invention’s success and legacy, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers designated the Newell Shredder as a National Historic Landmark in 1994.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Newell studied economics and completed courses at Baylor University, Trinity University and Arizona State University. He first joined the workforce due to the needs of the family business, but made his contribution as a teenager by working in the family’s scrapyards. From 1959 to 1965 he began working as a manager for the Newell Salvage Company in Phoenix, Arizona. During this time he continued his distance learning, where he spent a year studying law at LaSalle University. To further broaden his horizons, he completed welder and mechanic courses and became a diesel engine mechanic in 1961.

Later in his career, Mr. Newell was Executive Vice President of Newell Manufacturing Company from 1966 to 1974 and a founder and partner of Eumet GMBH in Frankfurt, Germany from 1984 to 1995. For 16 years, between 1984 and 2000, he was the founder of Newell Magnets in the UK. In 2015, Mr. Newell began working with his son Scott III by establishing Newell Recycling Equipment LLC in El Paso, Texas. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, he supports the company’s various management, sales and engineering activities while his son leads the company as President. As a testament to the company’s success, as of 2020 there are nearly 1,500 shredders worldwide, with more than half of all shredders either directly supplied or licensed by Newell.

As an extension of his professional career, Mr. Newell works as Vice President of China Recycling Newell Equipment Ltd., which operates as a manufacturer of all types of crushing and separating equipment at its overseas location. As of 2020, he is also Executive Vice President of Last Step Recycling, which processes automotive shredder residue to capture various metals used in the manufacture of cars, appliances and other equipment. Mr. Newell’s advice to future generations looking to start their own business is to develop a sense of empathy and understand the customer’s mindset and needs in order to make sales.

In addition to his core responsibilities, Mr. Newell has provided his expertise to the National Board of Directors of the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel, which recognized him with a 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry. He has also been a prominent member and officer of the Ferrous Division and the Shredder Committees of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). As an advocate for his community, Mr. Newell is a former trustee of the Baptist Memorial Hospital System in San Antonio and the Mission Road Foundation for Handicapped Children.

In particular, Mr. Newell is currently listed with Expert Engine as a subject matter expert for legal matters and those requiring advice. A widely published author, he has written more than 100 technical papers and presented them to steelmakers and scrap processors at numerous national and international conferences, which is a particularly satisfying aspect of his work. Mr. Newell attributes his success to his energy and curiosity, which contribute to his enthusiasm for reading, studying and researching his speeches and presentations. He finds that his mind is never still, which further empowers him to become a repository of necessary knowledge.

Looking to the future, Mr. Newell would like to expand Last Step Recycling while continuing the business expansion of China Recycling Newell Equipment to maintain the world leadership in designing and manufacturing more efficient crushing equipment through the introduction of computer control systems. where the lessons learned can be made highly repeatable.

Mr. Newell recently became a founder and partner of Newell Cobb Enterprises (NCE), which is installing a scrap recycling facility with a Newell shredder in the Port of Rio Hondo, Texas. NCE will also operate a Maritime Division with tugs and funnel vessels for efficient transport. In addition, there is another division that will manufacture Hopper Barges and that division already has a stated interest in purchasing the barges, valued at approximately $150 million.
