HAGERSTOWN, MD, March 21, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Sherrie L. Burkholder has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With a career spanning over four decades in the health care industry, Ms. Burkholder has distinguished herself as a registered nurse and respected leader in hospital administration. Currently serving as the nursing director at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center since 2023, she brings extensive experience to her role in managing comprehensive healthcare services for women and newborns, including labor and delivery and the newborn intensive care unit. The hospital, which boasts a 182-bed capacity, manages approximately 100 deliveries each month, and Ms. Burkholder thrives on a daily routine that includes conducting shift meetings with staff, making rounds with associates and attending strategic meetings.
Before accepting her current position, Ms. Burkholder excelled as the clinical education program manager for obstetrics at Howard County General Hospital from 2022 to 2023, having previously served as the unit director for obstetrics, labor and delivery at UPMC Western Maryland between 2020 and 2022. She had earned experience through previous roles as the manager of quality and informatics for Adventist HealthCare in 2020, and prospered in a successful tenure as the nurse manager for obstetrics, labor and delivery at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center from 2007 to 2020.
Ms. Burkholder’s leadership skills were honed through various managerial positions at Washington County Hospital between 2003 and 2007, where she worked in the context of pediatrics, surgical and outpatient units. From 1999 through 2002, she thrived as a nurse manager at Chambersburg Hospital, and from 1997 to 1999, she made significant contributions to the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at the rank of assistant manager. Ms. Burkholder also demonstrated the priority she places on education through roles as a childbirth educator at the same institution from 1989 to 1999, while holding a concurrent position as the clinical head nurse of obstetrics there from 1989 to 1997, and through her continued work as an instructor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program since 2003.
The ability to build upon a solid educational foundation has been integral to Ms. Burkholder’s accomplishments. Her pursuit of a career in nursing began with a Diploma in Nursing from Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1980, and she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of St. Francis in 1992. Subsequently, Ms. Burkholder completed a Master of Science in health administration from the same institution, and the choice of that degree path ensured she possessed the accounting background necessary to manage budgets once she secured a prominent leadership role.
Ms. Burkholder’s dedication to her profession is evident through her long-standing involvement with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses. Recognized for being an active member for 35 years as of 2023, she has notably served as the Maryland section leader for four consecutive years, and Ms. Burkholder’s guidance has facilitated the better management of member engagement and information dissemination.
Hailing from a family with a sustained military legacy, Ms. Burkholder aims to adhere to the values instilled in her during childhood, including social responsibility and empathy, and install these standards as cornerstones of her professional ethos. Outside of the professional sphere, Ms. Burkholder enjoys personal pursuits that reflect her commitment to a balanced life: she has spent over three decades refining her skills in cross-stitching, finds joy in walking her dogs, and has expressed herself through competitive dance and as a dance instructor.
Looking ahead, Ms. Burkholder aims to persist in conducting impactful work at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center before embracing retirement to pursue travel plans alongside her husband. They share a dream of visiting Norway to explore Valdres, connecting with her maternal family roots—a testament to Ms. Burkholder’s appreciation for heritage and adventure.
