Coastline Housing has officially opened a development of 26 new homes in St. Columb, one of which included the local housing association’s 5000th affordable house in Cornwall.
The project in St. Columb consists of 15 apartments at affordable rents and 11 shared apartments. The scheme was made possible thanks to funding of just over £1million from Homes England.
New resident Carol Smale cut the ribbon to launch the program alongside fellow residents, Coastline Housing staff and other partners involved with the project.
Mark Duddridge, Chairman of Coastline Housing, said: “We are extremely pleased to bring these homes to St. Columb and it marks a very special milestone for Coastline Housing as this new development brings our total condominium count to over 5,000.
“This means we are providing quality, affordable housing to more people in the county than ever before, and our development program has many more in the pipeline. Every new home we deliver is a further step in alleviating the acute crisis of affordable housing that is being felt by so many in Cornwall.”
The homes were built by Truro-based developer EBC Partnerships and have street names of Halidon Terrance and Polita Way, both chosen by City Council.
The Halidon Way was chosen for its connection to a historical figure in the city. Sir John Arundell of St. Columb Major was granted the right to a weekly market in the town after winning King Edward III in 1333. assisted at the Battle of Halidon Hill.
The properties in this development feature Coastline’s improved biodiversity measures. This means that bee bricks, bat and bird houses and hedgehog burrows have been installed across the board.
Allister Young, Chief Executive of Coastline Housing added, “We are extremely grateful for the support St Columb City Council has received in making this development a reality. City councilors have been positive and supportive from the initial planning phase, having identified housing needs in the area. We were also intrigued to hear from them the story of St. Columb’s role in the Battle of Halidon Hill and are delighted that this is reflected in one of the naming choices for this programme.”
The residents have moved in and are happily settling into their new home just in time for Christmas.
