BTA relaunches as Tinnitus UK to strengthen the fight against tinnitus

The Sheffield-based British Tinnitus Association – the only UK charity dedicated to helping one in seven UK adults living with tinnitus – is now Tinnitus UK.

Today (January 10, 2023), the world’s leading tinnitus charity launched a new name, website and chatbot – aiming to address the growing number of people living with tinnitus.

Deanne Thomas, CEO of Tinnitus UK said: “Now we are Tinnitus UK. This new name puts tinnitus first because fighting tinnitus is the main reason we are here and we want everyone to know that. Becoming Tinnitus UK will help us reach more people with tinnitus, be more visible and raise awareness of this condition, which can have a significant impact on people’s quality of life.

We were formed as the British Tinnitus Association in 1979, reflecting our roots as a network of tinnitus support groups. Then most people started calling us the BTA.”

Lynne Gillon, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Tinnitus UK said: “This marks the start of a very exciting time for the charity as we build on our past successes and strive to reach even more people who may be struggling with tinnitus – and we are approaching our vision: create a world where nobody suffers from tinnitus.”

Tinnitus UK received a large digital grant to improve their digital resources to further help people with tinnitus and they used this to create a new and improved website, enhanced web chat and tinnitus chatbot.

Deanne added: “Our new website makes it easier for people to navigate, get in touch with Tinnitus UK and find areas of support that suit them. The chatbot means we can help people any time of the day – as we know, tinnitus can increase at night. Our website integrates with our new Client Relationship Management (CRM) system, which will help us connect with more people with tinnitus than ever before!”

The chatbot will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – directing people with tinnitus to relevant resources every time they visit the site. This is the only tinnitus chatbot that is free and available to everyone, and represents a significant step for the charity in its goal to reach more people with tinnitus.

Alongside the new name, a refreshed visual identity was developed, featuring clean, bright colors and a soundwave graphic.

Notes for editors

Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a sound when there is no external source of the sound. Someone with tinnitus may hear ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling, or other noises. Tinnitus can be there all the time or it can come and go. The volume of a person’s tinnitus can vary from one episode to the next.

Tinnitus comes in many forms, but Tinnitus UK is for everyone living with tinnitus.

We strive for a world where no one suffers from tinnitus.

That’s why we offer free support to anyone who has tinnitus or cares for someone with tinnitus.
That’s why we’re committed to more investment in tinnitus research.
That’s why we connect the research community with people living with tinnitus to ensure those looking for new treatments and cures understand the impact tinnitus has on everyday life.
That’s why we work with healthcare professionals to make sure you’re getting the right information to treat your tinnitus.

One in seven adults in the UK will have tinnitus. Keep this in mind the next time you’re in the supermarket, on the bus, or on the street. Tinnitus affects 7.6 million people in the UK – 1.5 million of them suffer from severe tinnitus.

For everyone living with tinnitus, our message is clear – your fight is our cause.
