Tyrrell with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Tyrrell was an established steel manufacturing executive who spent 33 years in the industry. Having worked for several leading organizations throughout the country as Chief Executive Officer he was instrumental in the restart of the American Steel & Wire Corporation in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio, between 1986 through 1994. After the plant had been shuttered for two years due to labor issues, he was able to assemble a successful team, received national recognition for their highly creative employee involvement programs, convert the organization into a high-quality automotive supply manufacturing plant achieving over $350 million in sales, operate as a non-union entity, and took the company public, in just eight years. Mr. Tyrrell also garnered success with Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Raritan River Steel, Birmingham Steel Corporation, Bar Technologies Inc., and Republic Technologies International, in various high-level positions.

Aside from his full-time commitments, Mr. Tyrrell also served on the board of directors of American Steel & Wire, Birmingham Steel, Bar Technologies, and Republic Technologies International. He has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals. He was a member of numerous industry-related organizations, including the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Cold Finished Steel Bar Institute, the American Wire Producers Association, and the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, and testified in front of the House Ways and Means Committee on two occasions.

In 2000, Mr. Tyrrell left the steel industry and proceeded to found or co-found multiple diverse organizations, including several in the non-profit arena. He was a co-founder, senior advisor, and board director of Glengary LLC, a venture catalyst organization based in Cleveland, that invested monetary and human capital into regional start-ups. Next, he co-founded and was chairman of Segmint, a digital analytics company, specializing in the banking industry, which experienced a very favorable exit in 2022. Mr. Tyrrell then became founder and managing partner of CollaboRx LLC. Located in Independence, Ohio, his pro bono consulting firm specializes in nonprofit and entrepreneurial consulting for collaborative visioning, especially impacting the social determinants of health through nature-based education for PK-5 underserved regional populations, while also supporting females in STEM education.

During this timeframe, he also founded two non-profit organizations: Business Volunteers Unlimited, which specialized in developing businesses and their employees to become engaged in formal volunteer programs assisting the region’s vast non-profit base and providing training for potential new board members for roles with these same non-profits; and, Great Lakes Biomimicry, with a mission to create conditions for innovation through biomimicry, exploring opportunities, solving problems, and driving sustainability by harnessing the intelligence found in nature’s 3.8 billion years of R&D.

Since 1986, Mr. Tyrrell has served as a board member for nearly 30 regional not-for-profit organizations. Currently he serves on the Ohio Advisory Board of the Trust for Public Land, as a member of the STEM Advisory Committee for the Girl Scouts of NEO, on the board of trustees for the Cleveland Zoological Society, Philanthropy Chair for the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Emeritus Chair of Great Lakes Biomimicry, as a member of the Cleveland Leadership Center’s Leadership Council., and the digital news start-up, Signal Ohio’s Advisory Board. In the health care sector, he has been a trustee for the Saint Vincent Charity Health Campus Board of the Sisters of Charity Health System and served as the Chair of their Joseph and Mary’s Respite Home Campaign Committee.

Mr. Tyrrell graduated from Elmhurst University with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts in 1967. He served for 21 years on the University’s Board of Trustees, during that time being recognized as Alumni of the Year in 1994 and received their Founder’s Medal in 2007.

Highlighting his achievements, Mr. Tyrrell received an Honorary Doctorate from Baldwin Wallace University in 1992, having served on their board for 21 years and as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee for 16 years. He was also recognized among 30 Difference Makers in the 30th-anniversary issue of Crain’s Cleveland Business in 2010, was named as the Entrepreneur of the Year for Northeast Ohio by Inc. Magazine and Ernst and Young in 1988 and received a Register Award for Business and Industry from Esquire Magazine in 1988.
