Mr. Zampella is a consultant, coach, teacher, writer, and researcher who has dedicated his career to creating a contemplative pedagogy that develops conscious leadership to cultivate learning organizations. His work integrates Eastern philosophy and practices to expand our Western mindset.

Inspired to create change by his personal journey as a son of Italian immigrants, Mr. Zampella struggled to come out as a gay man, dropping out of high school in 1981. He dedicated his early career to LGBTQ and AIDS activism, serving as founding publisher and editor-in-chief of Bravo! Newsmagazine, an LGBTQ weekly, from 1987 until 1993. That year, at 29, he sustained a life-threatening injury that he described as a “wake-up call” and enrolled in San Diego City Community College, graduating with an AA in 1995. He continued his education, graduating from the University of California San Diego with a BA in sociology in 1997, an MS in journalism from Columbia University in 1998, and an MS in business and organizational leadership from Mercy University in 1999.

Through the 1990s, Mr. Zampella focused on human rights, serving as commissioner of the San Diego Human Relations Commission from 1993 until 1997. After completing graduate school in 1999, he remained at Mercy University as an assistant professor of business and accounting until 2005, developing a reputation for his thoughtful and personal approach to organizational leadership. In 2000, he founded Bhavana Learning Group. His firm specializes in adult learning and leadership development, integrating Western learning models and Buddhist psychology to cultivate wisdom in deep listening, conscious leadership, and learning cultures. A practicing Buddhist, Mr. Zampella completed a certificate in contemplative psychotherapy and Buddhist psychology at the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science in 2018.

In addition to his work with Bhavana Learning Group, Mr. Zampella continued teaching as a lecturer at the Rutgers University Business School from 2014 until 2017 and currently serves on the editorial board of Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education. He has published on topics in coaching, learning, and leadership, contributing a chapter each in “Complex Situations in Coaching,” “Coaching Wisdom: Voices of the Gay Coaches” and authoring articles for academia.edu, and presenting “Commitment of Listening,” a white paper. As a leader in adult learning, he is active in the International Coaching Federation, Tergar International Meditation Community, and Consciousness Leaders. Mr. Zampella looks forward to developing “unlearning” methods and practices to rethink our understanding of adult learning over the next decade and intends to publish his memoirs in the coming years. In his personal time, Mr. Zampella is dedicated to meditation practice and philosophical inquiries and enjoys reading, writing, cooking, and music.
