PENSACOLA, FL, October 17, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — William R. Drummond Jr., MBA, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

William Drummond, Jr. is a Biocompatibility and Material Scientist with extensive experience in the medical device and pharmaceutical industry. He currently serves as a Materials Scientist at Mammotome, a Danaher breast cancer company. In this role, he focuses on developing materials for biopsy markers that allow physicians to track biopsy sites over time, ensuring accurate follow-up care for patients. The formulation work that William Drummond, Jr. is performing for Mammotome can also be leveraged to deliver patient-care pharmaceuticals and coagulate excess blood tissue with the potential to create intellectual property for the company. While at Mammotome, William also identified a process change and a strategic path forward to save the company $200,000 per year.

William Drummond Jr. also served as a Biocompatibility Scientist at Abbott. Abbott is one of the most prominent medical device companies in the world. His work during this time included successful regulatory body submissions that ensured that cardiovascular medical devices complied with FDA, European Union, and Rest of World medical device regulations, with a particular emphasis on the absence of toxins used in materials that comprised such implantable medical devices. As a result, William won several awards for high performance for his contributions while at Abbott. Prior to this, he served as a Biocompatibility Specialist at Integra LifeSciences, where he focused on the safety and biocompatibility of materials used in critical ventricular, atrial, and peritoneal combination medical devices which release Rifampicin and Clindamycin antibiotics and are sold across the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and Korea.

William also served as a Biocompatibility Engineer at the Natus Medical Global Engineering Division where he managed and collaborated with cross-functional teams on the design and execution of medical device clinical safety assessments for the development and commercialization stages of EEG, EMG, and ECG electrodiagnostic medical devices and all accessories. During this time at Natus Medical, he was able to identify potentially harmful materials including PVC with DEHP, a potential carcinogenic plasticizer. He also identified potential uncured traces of Polyoxymethylene (POM) also known as polyformaldehyde; consequently, guiding the company to alternate, safer biocompatible materials such as ABS.

Concurrently, from 2014 to 2024, William served as a biocompatibility and quality engineering management consultant through Drummond Consulting & Enterprises. In this capacity, he has served for such leading companies as Johnson & Johnson Vistakon where he accomplished better alignment of regulatory protocol for all Acuvue medical devices between the Jacksonville, Florida and Limerick, Ireland sites, contributing to improved cross-site consistency and communication. In addition, while working with the Zimmer Biomet Craniomaxillofacial & Thoracic Microfixation implantable medical devices, William found that a critical Zimmer angle screwdriver was malfunctioning during surgery due to a materials failure. As a result, a Health and Hazard Evaluation was performed and the company decided to provide two drivers instead of only one to the surgeons in case one failed during patient operations. In essence, during this time, William provided subject matter expertise on material science, quality engineering, and regulatory compliance to consistently mitigate the risk to patient safety as far as possible.

Earlier in his career, William worked with Pall Life Sciences, where he contributed to biotechnology applications and the development of materials for Blood Filtration, Western blotting, Blood Glucose, Protein Diagnosis, Lateral Flow and other in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) medical products and industrial applications. William Drummond Jr. began his career working at the University of South Alabama School of Medicine Pathology & Scanning Electron Microscopy Laboratory for Dr. Walter Wilborne, a Founding Father of the USA Medical School. During this time, he supported early studies to understand the effects of second-hand cigarette smoke and the development of Naltrexone, a pharmaceutical drug to combat the effects of morphine. Today, Naltrexone is used to treat opioid and alcohol use disorder. Next, while working at the Monsanto Technical Center for Dr. Lloyd Goetller, a Research and Development Red Cap Fellow, he focused on polymer technology and the development of nanocomposite nylon materials and non-halogenated fire-retardant products which significantly improved consumer safety. At the time, the Monsanto Chemical Group at the Technical Center was known as one of the premier polymer research facilities in the world.

Throughout his professional life, William Drummond Jr. has been recognized for his contributions to the biocompatibility & material science field in medical devices, receiving a Speaker Recognition Certificate for his participation in the 2024 European Biomedical Institute Summit on Biocompatibility Testing in Medical Devices held in Munich, Germany. The topic for his presentation was “Biocompatibility Solutions to Mitigate the Risk to Patient Safety”. He considers his ability to create safe materials for medical devices as his most notable achievement, viewing material science as both an art and a gift. Earlier, William has also presented the “History of Materials Science” for the American Chemical Society. William is very thankful for these opportunities to present his work and subject matter expertise.

Serving as a foundation for his professional success, William Drummond Jr. holds an MBA with a specialty focus in the Biomedical, Industrial Machinery Industry from the University of West Florida. The MBA program at UWF is certified by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which includes the top 15% of business schools. William Drummond Jr. also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the University of South Alabama. The chemistry department at USA is certified by the American Chemical Society.
