BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – ‘Tis the season for football and to be thankful.

The Space Coast High School Varsity football team is giving thanks this week for an incredible season — and also to a Tampa Bay Buccaneer whose generosity helped change the program’s fortunes.

Before the season began, it was obvious the Vipers football team needed all new equipment, which cost thousands of dollars.

The Space Coast football team didn’t have the money until Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield stepped in. The Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation donated the funds to get the equipment.

The Vipers got new helmets and pads, and priceless extra motivation. Players told News 6 that the Mayfields’ belief in them was meaningful, and they wanted to pay their generosity back by giving it their all on the field.

Space Coast went on to win 10 games and capture the Sunshine State Athletic Association championship. It was quite a turnaround from last season, when the Vipers won only one game.

They’re still basking in the glow of their championship. Parents and friends of the team have set up a GoFundMe to help purchase championship T-shirts and rings.
