mardy fish is as captain of the US Davis Cup Team after the US Tennis Association said on Friday that the two sides “mutually agreed to pursue a new direction.”
The USTA announced the change in a press release that began listing members of America’s roster for a qualifier in Uzbekistan on February 3-4. These players are doubles specialist Rajeev Ram, Tommy Paul, Jenson Brooksby, Mackenzie McDonald and Austin Krajicek.
Ram was notably dropped from the roster by Fish for the Davis Cup Finals in November. That was just after the 38-year-old Ram reached No. 1 in men’s doubles for the first time after winning a second consecutive doubles championship at the US Open for his third overall Grand Slam trophy.
Fish, a former professional player who has been the US captain since 2019, and Davis Cup coach Bob Bryan were each fined $10,000 by the International Tennis Integrity Agency in November for using social media for a gambling operator had advertised.
Fish and Bryan also received four-month suspensions, which were provisionally lifted and would only be enforced if there was another rule violation during a probationary period ending in March.
The United States reached the Davis Cup quarterfinals in 2022, losing to Italy at that point. The Americans have won a record 32 titles in the men’s international team competition, most recently in 2007.
The USTA said on Friday that an interim captain would be selected for the games against Uzbekistan “in the near future” while information on the search for someone to fill the position on a full-time basis would come “at a later date”.
A USTA spokesman referenced Friday’s release and declined to comment further. Fish did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Fish won six singles titles and eight doubles titles as a player, won a silver medal for the United States at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in singles, and competed in the Davis Cup from 2002 to 2012. He made it to the quarterfinals of three Grand Slam tournaments and achieved a career-best seventh place finish. In 2015 he retired from the tennis tour.
