PHILADELPHIA – Aaron Nola hit a no-hitter in the seventh inning and batted 12, Trea Turner hit two homers from his four hits and led the Philadelphia Phillies to their third straight win, 8-3 over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
Nola (5-4) fanned out 10 and had the minimum through six as he attempted to throw the Phillies’ first no-hitter since 2015. The right-handed ace got into trouble in the seventh when two batsmen caught a walk and a field error. Nola still had two outs when he passed a 2-0 break ball to Nick Maton and the former Phillie smashed a right to make the game 5-3.
Maton’s bat-flip home run was the only hit Nola allowed. He ran three over seven innings.
Seranthony Domínguez and Andrew Vasquez each threw a scoreless inning from the bullpen.
Nola passed Jake Marisnick with two outs in the third inning, but the outfielder was out on first base because catcher JT Realmuto caught a steal. Nola went with an out against Maton in the fifth set, but the baserunner was erased after Eric Haase hit in a double play at the end of the innings.
Nola threw 68 of 108 shots for strikes in front of 33,196 fans. Nola, who has had two strikeouts on three auto-strike calls, has now pitched at least six innings in each of his last ten starts.
In a career he’s spent entirely with the Phillies since his debut in 2015, he improved to 83-66. The right-hander is a season-ending free agent. Nola and the Phillies entered into contract negotiations during spring training, with no plans to resume until the end of the season.
Nola’s no-no has also faltered.
There were no no-hitters in the majors this season, the first since Major League Baseball introduced a pitch clock. There was a record nine in 2021 and four last year.
Returning home from a 4-6 road trip, the Phillies hoped for the success of last June’s season that undid a miserable start and carried them to the NL Championship. So far, so good. The Phillies have won their last two games in Washington and also have victories at home. They hit a run in each of the first three innings with Turner’s RBI single, Nick Castellanos’ run-scoring double and Turner’s solo shot in the third.
Bryce Harper added an RBI single in the fifth part. Turner hit his seventh homer of the season and his first multi-homer game with the Phillies in the same inning against Tigers starter Joey Wentz (1-6).
Turner has slumped over $300 million in the first season of his 11-year contract. He only hit .143 on the road trip but has now hit three home runs in his last two home games.
Veterans Parade
Tigers DH Miguel Cabrera, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season, is the last active player to have played at Veterans Stadium. The Phillies last played in their former stadium, which has since been destroyed, in 2003. He played six games at the vet in 2003 with the Florida Marlins. The Phillies will honor Cabrera before Wednesday’s game.
