CHARLOTTE, NC — The Carolina Panthers handed first-team substitutions to rookie quarterback Bryce Young in practice this week, a move coach Frank Reich described as the next step in his development.

Reich reckons Young will continue to get first-team representatives “for now” as the Panthers prepare for their mandatory minicamp session next week and training camp in late July. Reich declined to name Young as the team’s starting quarterback this season, saying there was still plenty of time to make that decision.

“Not yet,” said Reich. “But he showed everything you want to see. You only make a decision when you have to make it. We will continue to give him and our team the opportunity to improve and earn (for him) this starting position. So far, he and many others have taken the necessary steps to secure that spot, but we don’t have to make that decision just yet. So we will keep chugging on.”

Young, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, took over as first-team substitute from veteran Andy Dalton earlier this week, but reporters were allowed into practice for the first time on Thursday.
