In this genre-bending mystery caper – from the mind of Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier – John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris play an unlikely trio whose discovery in Glen, a fictional US town, brings to light a nefarious government conspiracy.

The Flash (Prime Video, Apple TV Plus)
Okay, DC’s The Lightning isn’t technically available for free streaming this weekend – it only came out a week ago! — but the new superhero movie Is already available for purchase on VOD (video-on-demand) services such as Prime Video and Apple TV Plus.
In this controversial film, Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen (aka The Flash) joins forces with various versions of Batman to thwart a known Kryptonian enemy that emerges from the past. It stars Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle and Michael Shannon.
The Lightning was the subject of negative press for various reasons – which may explain why Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is making the film available to stream so soon – but it’s still an action-packed superhero film that has a lot to offer existing DC fans.

Special Ops: Lioness (Paramount Plus)

Zoe Saldaña plays a CIA station chief who recruits a young Marine (Laysla De Oliveira) to infiltrate a dangerous terrorist organization in this eight-episode military thriller based on true events. Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly and Dave Annable are among the supporting cast of the series.
Critics have described Special Unit: Lioness as “an engaging story that blends action and personal drama,” suggesting it could be one of this year’s best paramount plus shows.

Founded: City Primeval (Hulu)
Timothy Olyphant reprises his role as US Marshal Raylan Givens Reasons: City prehistoric timesa miniseries sequel to FX’s acclaimed Elmore Leonard-inspired series Justified.
Adapted from Leonard’s novel of the same name but with a change that makes Givens the main character, this eight-part series continues eight years after the events of Justified, with Givens now living in Miami with his teenage daughter (played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian Olyphant). However, things take a dangerous turn when Givens becomes involved with a violent criminal known as The Oklahoma Wildman.
The first two episodes of Reasons: City prehistoric times are now available to stream hulu in the US, with the remaining six entries arriving every Tuesday through August 29. UK viewers will have to wait until September to see this post on Disney Plus.

The Deepest Breath (Netflix)
The first of three documentary picks this week is The deepest breath on Netflix.
A collaboration between A24 and Netflix, this feature-length film from Irish filmmaker Laura McGann focuses on the extreme world of freediving. Specifically, it’s about Italian champion Alessia Zecchini and her Irish safety diver (and love partner) Stephen Keenan as Zecchini prepares to attempt an 85-foot tunnel located over 180 feet beneath the Red Sea. whoops
reviewers have described The deepest breath as “staggering and beautiful”, so this could be one of the very special ones in 2023 best netflix documentaries.

Stephen Curry: Underrated (Apple TV Plus)
Sports fans (or more specifically, basketball fans), take note: Stephen Curry: Underestimated is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.
This feature-length documentary – from acclaimed non-fiction filmmaker Peter Nicks – chronicles the life and legacy of four-time NBA champion Steph Curry. Believe And Black Panther Filmmaker Ryan Coogler is on board as a producer, and Curry himself was also involved in the production of the documentary.

Glitch: Rise and Fall of HQ Trivia (Max)

As the title suggests, this CNN-produced documentary chronicles the meteoric rise and subsequent decline of the mobile quiz app HQ Trivia, which once counted 2.3 million people in its regular player base before falling victim to technical issues and board politics.
