Chromebooks have been game-ready for years thanks to streaming services like Nvidia GeForce Now. But an announcement from Google today (June 7, 2023) brings even more exciting news to Chromebook gaming.
According to one Official Google blog post, Minecraft: Bed Rock Edition is now available to download on Chromebooks via the Google Play Store, meaning Chromebooks can play the game natively. Also included is the Minecraft Marketplace and the ability to play in realms. It’s available for all Chromebooks released in the last three years, which is even better news for those with older models.
And if you want to play with others, crossplay functionality between Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC is at your disposal. Multiple online modes such as creative mode and survival mode, as well as the new Trails & Tales update and all of its content are accessible via crossplay.
We’ve reached out to Google for comment on whether additional titles will be available natively on Chrome OS, and will update this story once we receive official news.
Gaming Chromebooks are the future
Although gaming has been possible on Chromebooks for several years, there are Chromebooks that are specifically designed for gaming Acer Chromebook 516 GE are a bit more controversial. What makes things even more enticing is the fact that Chromebooks, even the best models, are very affordable compared to Ultrabooks and even now dedicated gaming machines. So if Google invests in gaming Chromebooks, they could have a product that offers the best of a gaming laptop but without the high gaming laptop price tag. And as a fellow consumer, I find the idea exciting.
