Apple just announced macOS “Sonoma”. WWWDC 2023which introduces us to the latest generation of Mac operating systems.
The new macOS brings many new exciting features to Macs and offers plenty of customization options to spice up your setup. However, here are five of the most important updates and features to keep an eye on.
If you watched the keynote, you know widgets took center stage macOS Sonoma.
Widgets have become an important part of the average iPhone user experience, so it’s very exciting to see how widgets make the leap to macOS. You can now place widgets right on your desktop instead of hiding them in a dedicated area, and they’ll disappear into the background when you open a new window. And for those of us who need everything to match your setup: the widgets adapt to the color of your background image – just like on the iPhone.
I’m really looking forward to outfitting my MacBook with new widgets and organizing it in a stylish, aesthetic way.
2. Game mode on Sonoma
The development of the M-series chips changed the way we think about gaming on Mac products, and Apple has redoubled its efforts to integrate gaming into its products. The new macOS Game Mode feature optimizes your gaming performance and prioritizes CPU and GPU performance to give you better frame rates, lower audio latency with Airpods, and better responsiveness when using Xbox and Xbox PS5 controllers.
Game mode is probably the feature I’m most looking forward to as I want to be able to play the bigger game titles without having to buy a new games console. That plus the fact that legendary game developer Hideo Kojima stole the show by revealing he’ll be bringing the director’s cut with him Death Stranding transition to macOS later this year. He also promised that future games from Kojima Productions would be coming to the Mac, so it could be a big year for gaming on Macs.
3. Video Conferencing
The new macOS update makes video conferencing far more interesting — and more interactive than ever. With the new macOS Sonoma update, you can now have an overlay of yourself at the top of your screen, allowing you to be much more engaged in your work presentation or the occasional meeting with your friends.
If you’re using TikTok, imagine the app’s green screen effect elevating your face above whatever you’re talking about. You can walk around and talk and stand in front of your content to point out details.
4. Improved Safari with profiles, password sharing and web app integration
Safari on macOS gets a major update and finally adds features common to other popular browsers. Safari now has profiles on macOS. So if you share a device with a friend, sibling, family, or just have a work and personal profile, you can keep everything separate and safe.
Private browsing sites are now self-locking and can be password protected. They also now support password sharing, so you can keep your sneaky searches or important websites private.
5. Here you can find out when it will be published
The developer beta for macOS Sonoma is available now via Apple Developer Program and a public beta will be available via Apple Beta Software Program next month. The free full release is expected later this year.
I’m really excited to see how the new macOS will spice up my device and give my MacBook a fresh new feel. It’s like buying a whole new device!
