Microsoft has confirmed that some 32-bit apps have problems copying and saving files between different versions of Windows.
The problem affects a number of popular programs and MicrosoftOffice Apps including Word and Excel cause users to find that they cannot save their work and face “Document not saved” error message.
According to Microsoft, the problem primarily affects enterprise and business users, as well as consumers and users Windows Devices in their home are unlikely to be affected.
Windows copy problems
“You may have intermittent problems saving, copying, or attaching files with 32-bit apps that recognize large addresses and use the CopyFile API,” the company said a support page outline the problems.
“Windows devices are more likely to be affected by this issue when using commercial/enterprise security software that uses extended file attributes.”
Microsoft advises that all of its most popular Windows builds will be affected, including Windows 11 version 22H2; Windows 10 version 22H2; Windows 11 version 21H2; and Windows 10 version 21H2.
There are no reports of File Explorer being affected by the copy issue, however Microsoft does point out that the CopyFile API used by a number of specific applications may be affected. The company added that 64-bit apps are not affected by this issue, which also avoids apps that are 32-bit and don’t honor large addresses.
Currently, Microsoft has only been able to release a fix for Windows 10 and Windows 11 21H2, which is available through the Known Issue Rollback system. Microsoft is also working on a patch for other versions and will provide an update soon.
The company says users may be able to work around the issue simply by trying to save or copy the file again.
“Since the problem occurs only sporadically, it is likely that it will lead to success in a later attempt,” says Microsoft’s recommendation.
