macOS Sonoma works on fewer Macs than ever — here’s what you need to get it running

Today at WWDC 2023, Apple announced the new macOS Sonoma, the latest operating system for Mac devices. The new version of macOS is packed with new, refreshing features that many Mac users are sure to love – assuming your device actually supports the update.

MacOS Sonoma will drop support for 2017 models of the iMac and MacBook Pro, as well as the last 12-inch MacBook model. This could spell doom for users of these Macs, as Apple has a history of dropping compatibility and support for older devices as new ones come onto the scene.

So if you own any of the 2017 models above, unfortunately you won’t be able to participate in all the cool things this new update is bringing. It’s unclear if any of the Sonoma features discussed at WWDC will show up in older versions of macOS, but given Apple’s track record, we’d say that’s unlikely.

Things are getting tight for the remaining Intel models in the Mac lineup, and as Apple shifts its focus more and more towards machines running its own M-series chips, we’ll likely add to this lack of support in future updates . We wouldn’t be surprised if the next major edition of macOS ditched the Intel models entirely. So if you haven’t upgraded your hardware, it might be time to start looking for an M2 replacement.
