It’s been a busy few days for Samsung Galaxy S23 Leaks, but we’re not done yet: the latest from the rumor mill is that the three models in the range will come with internal storage options starting at 256GB, up from 128GB last year.
This comes from regular tipsters Ahmed Qwalder (opens in new tab) (over SamMobile (opens in new tab)), who also predicts that the Ultra model will be available with 512 GB and 1 TB of on-board storage. At least from this source, there is no mention of higher options for the Standard and Plus models.
We’re also mentioned by 8GB RAM for the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus and 12GB RAM for the Galaxy S23 Ultra – though previous leaks have indicated that a version of the Ultra phone with 8GB of RAM is also in the pipeline.
setting options
That Galaxy S22 is available with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage on board, as is the Galaxy S22 plus. When it comes to them Galaxy S22 Ultrait’s available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, giving you the most configuration options of them all.
This latest leak reveals that the 128GB starting option will be removed for all three phones – with no other options added. The 8GB of RAM (with 12GB as an option on the Ultra) would also suit the 2022 phones.
So while this is technically an upgrade – and one that might come free if the Galaxy S23 phones’ starting prices match those of their predecessors – Samsung is reducing the number of variants that will be available for the series this year.
Analysis: Internal storage still matters
With so many apps now using streaming technology, maybe internal storage options aren’t as important as they used to be – whatever NetflixSpotify and the others pull all their content from the cloud and not from your actual smartphone.
Still, the more storage space the better, not least so apps like Netflix and Spotify can cache video and audio offline for times without Wi-Fi. Then there are podcasts, photos and videos you take yourself, and apps and games that just keep getting bigger and more complex.
In short, 128GB is starting to feel a bit low for a starting configuration on a modern phone, although many of them still start there. This year could be the year that 256GB and beyond becomes the norm – although Apple recently offered 64GB iphone 12it may take you a while to catch up.
We’re still longing for the days when phones came with a memory card slot that allowed users to add more storage when needed. That option is now largely gone, but a bump up to 256GB for the Galaxy S23 will be welcome – as long as the price is right.
