The United States government is reportedly close to approving Nvidia’s export of advanced AI chips to Saudi Arabia, a move that could significantly enhance the kingdom’s artificial intelligence capabilities. The potential deal centers around Nvidia’s H200 chips, which are instrumental in powering cutting-edge AI models, including those used in platforms like OpenAI’s GPT-4. These chips are expected to play a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s AI strategy, which was a key discussion point at the recent Global AI Network (GAIN) summit.
Efforts are currently underway in Saudi Arabia to meet US security protocols, which could fast-track the acquisition process. Saudi officials have expressed their willingness to comply with US export regulations to secure access to this critical technology.
The potential export approval comes amidst the backdrop of broader US restrictions on AI chip sales, especially to China and several Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE. Both Nvidia and the US Department of Commerce have declined to comment on the discussions. The US Department of Commerce noted that export control decisions involve input from multiple agencies, including Defense, State, and Energy, underscoring the strategic importance of these negotiations.
